Remedial application of Yoga

Hi All,

Many of you have already experienced how the regular practice of yoga is health enhancing and healing, however, there are several situations where one would benefit from a remedial version of Yoga instead. These would include someone recovering from injury, or in pain or has a health condition that prevents them from fully participating in regular classes. The classical yoga postures require effort and skill to be health enhancing and therapeutic whereas an individual in pain requires the injured area to rest first before introducing corrective action.

For this reason I have introduced a Remedial Yoga Class on Wednesday afternoons that is designed to accommodate students who are suffering from a health condition. This may include but not limited to any of the following conditions:

  • Sciatica
  • Lower back pain
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, shoulder, neck etc.
  • Musculoskeletal injury
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Digestive ailments
  • Migraines
  • PMS
  • Anxiety

How it works

Take for instance a musculoskeletal injury or limitation that is causing discomfort and limiting movement. Yoga practiced remedially works by correcting underlying in-discrepancies in the body that contribute to the root causes of the discomfort and, at the same time, educates practitioners in proper alignment of the muscles, bones, tissue and movements.

Initially, passive postures are employed to rest the painful or injured areas. This

  1. reduces inflammation
  2. increases circulation to the injured area
  3. and as a result alleviates pain

As tight muscles are released they have the opportunity to return to their normal position relative to bones, organs and connective tissue. In addition, the passive poses impose a gently lengthening to tight inflexible areas, which is an important phase in recovery before introducing corrective actions.

As imbalances and misalignments of the superficial layers are corrected, supported postures that involve more active stretching are introduced. As pain diminishes and flexibility and strength increase and postural alignment improve the teacher guides the students through more challenging postures that affect deeper more subtle misalignments.

Students’ progress from supported supine and prone positions to seated, standing, inverted, backward or forward bending postures eventually all poses are performed with awareness and students are integrated back into regular classes.

So, there is no need to be walking around with discomfort when you can have a personal daily self-care yoga regime that will manage and prevent reoccurrence. Note that the therapeutic version of Yoga can also be used in conjunction with modern physical treatments.

    I have been doing classes with Tracy for 4 weeks .
    I have knee problems and have not exercised for about 3 years because of this problem.
    I am so impressed with Tracy as she adjusts the yoga position to suit.
    I have better movement in my knees and even my balance has greatly approved. I feel rejuvenated after every session.
    I highly recommend doing a yoga session with Tracy and am certain that you will certainly feel so much better.
